Live at Electric Air Studios
VALE

Hello digital visitor. My name is Andres Daza and this is my studio's website. This page was made to showcase a beautiful project I had the privilege and honor to be part of. Over the first few months of 2024 I got to host VALE for some rehearsals here at Electric Air Studios. The band was rocking and the songs were really really beautifully written. It was clear Valeria & Valentina had something special going on. They settled right into our cozy live room and got the band locked in for their upcoming show.
A few weeks later we begun talks about shooting some live videos for them here at the studio. I was beyond excited! The preproduction consisted on listening to the songs of the upcoming album and deciding which tracks would be best, what instrumentation and what visual aesthetic would make most sense with in our capabilities, budget and vision. We set a date for June 2024 and got to work.
VALE put together a female driven band with aims to go into the studio and capture live and raw performances. To do so, they enlisted the incredible Gisela Giurfa on drums, and the amazing Tiffany Romanlouk on Electric Pianos & Synths. They also borrowed my upright bass so they could practice a duo version of their song "Ven Y Dimelo En La Cara".
We planned to execute the recording of 5 songs over 5 days. Two days of rehearsals, one day of set design, lighting, & audio setup and 2 days of recording. Unfortunately South Florida was hit with extreme flooding for the first two days of production, leaving us with no choice but to strap in and focus on completing our goal with 3 days instead of 5.
Day 1 - Rehearsals. After numerous warnings of potential flooding and rain, we got lucky as the skies cleared and were able to get in the studio to rehearse. This was the first time VALE and Gisela played with Tiffany. They locked right in, and got to go over the songs. It went smooth. As the girls learned the music we also spent time on drum tuning, synth sound design, Guitar tones, & vocal microphone choices for Vale and Tina.
Once rehearsals were over, we got to start working on Lighting, Set Design and Camera blocking and Audio setup. It took all night but it was well worth it.
Day 2 - Luminosa & Dejame Ir - Recording.
The studio was ready and looking incredible. The anticipation was just as high as the exhaustion. I set up most of the studio by myself overnight and slept maybe an hour or two. Nothing a shot of espresso with some raw sugar can't fix! I was determined to make this a grand experience for VALE, the band, and the production team.
Our Goals, to record the two more upbeat songs for the album.
Cameras Rolling! Band Ready? "READY" Roll Audio... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 9, 10. Go!.... And CUT!
Take after take, the band embodied the song making fine adjusting with aims to reach that extra 2% of magic. The video team go coooler and better shots too. All of a sudden, Tiffany tells us on of the keys of my vintage Wurlitzer broke off. These things happen, and she took charge in fixing it. Grabbed some gaffer tape and made two very small rolls and shoved them right inside the key and pressed it tight against the wood. It got on there tight and we were able to finish the takes for her Wurly Solo! We decided, for the other two songs we would switch to a Fender Rhodes Mk ii and pray we wouldn't have any keys break! Crisis averted and a safe plan of action was decided for the next day.
We did 4-6 takes of each song and had so much fun. The project was taking shake and it was all coming together! Finally got home to rest and get a good night sleep. Day 3 was upon us.
Day 3 - Algo Que Darte & Me Importas -- Production
These two songs were slower and more intimate. The vibe had to change. So before VALE and the band arrived dimmed down the lights, and hazed up the place for a moodier look. We repositioned the cameras and took more risks with the handheld shots to showcase the space and the creative lighting we had planned for these shots.
The girls killed it! They played their hearts and our no vintage key's broke off fortunately.
We had 4 songs captured and ready for post production. For the remaining song, Ven Y Dimelo En La Cara, Vale, Tine and I had discussed doing a stripped down version as a duo. Tina had written the song originally on piano. She told me how they used to play this piano at this shop and how it inspired her. Vale had jumped on guitar for the album recording but for this I had noticed we could use my upright bass as a way to show case Vale's multi instrumental potential. She had studied upright bass earlier in life but yet had never played one in her music. The idea was set and so was the upcoming record date.
VYDELC Day was finally here. We set up our Booth with our beautiful Yamaha U3 Upright Piano, totally naked and some moody lights. The haze machine was ready to go too. VALE invited Gisela again to oversee the musical arrangement and help Vale come up with some baselines that support Tina's Piano parts. I also wanted to try something different and capture this song as a one camera single shot video on a gimbal. The weeks leading up to this video shoot I practiced and learned everything I could about gimbals and even planned the shots. The interesting part was the alternating vocal lines that I could follow with the camera and also zoom out when they sang together.
Not going to lie, I was nervous the song was beautiful, the set was beautiful, and the girls were singing and playing their hearts out. However this time the video was a performance too. I had no backup cameras, no second safety shot. We all had to get it right because there would be no editing of any kind. Its 100% Live single-shot take of the performance.
And we nailed it!
Over the coming weeks we mixed, edited, tuned the audio as well as synchronized the cameras and edited the videos. The last step was tying the visual identity of the videos with the beautiful Graphic Design by Juan Pablo from RÉPLICA. The fond they designed is one of a kind for this project and it fits the vibe perfectly.
